Discussion:
[WBEL-devel] White Box for IA64

I rolled a new set of isos based on the IA64-RC1 release mentioned last
month
(ftp://ftp.ii.uib.no/pub/janfrode/whitebox.org/people/pasi.pirhonen/
IA64-RC1/). I added a kernel patch to allow the distribution to run on
Itanium I machines, and rolled in the first set of updated RPMs. I've
been calling the distribution WhiteBox 3.0.1. I'd like to post it for
general use, but I have a couple questions first:

Since Itanium I compatibility is a departure from RedHat, can this
thing be called White Box?

If so, are there objections to the version number?

Thanks

Could I please have a copy of this build?

I'd be happy to host it on our ftp-server (ftp.ii.uib.no), and help
build any new patches from RedHat.

Regarding nameing and version number.. I don't care, just want
something better than RedHat 7.2 to run on our Itanium servers :-)

Sure thing. The isos are available at
http://gelato.uiuc.edu/projects/whitebox.

Something that may be interesting to other White Box compilers:
The scripts I used to compile the distribution are availble in the
scripts directory at the above site. The one that is particularly
useful is the build_rpms script. This builds several rpms in parallel
to take advantage of multiple CPUs.

There is a build in the contrib directory, but it hasn't been updated
since the initial release. Someone made a post recently about having an
updated spin, including support for Itanic version 1.

Sounds like the two of you should get together on this one. Not having a
machine, I can't really do much on the IA64 front but I'd like to see it
supported by somebody.

I'm interested too - our box is going to be running genuine RedHat for a
while yet but I'm keen to shift across at some stage. How about setting
up a whitebox-ia64 mailing list for everone interested (or maybe a
whitebox-64bit list to do both ia64 and AMD64)?

Dunno about AMD64, I'm cooking up something in that dept. But as for
ia64, I don't see myself doing it. Too expensive to put together a
buildhost for a platform I can't see using, especially with Intel caving
and releasing an AMD64 compatible CPU.

So with no further ado... whitebox-***@beau.org should now be awaiting
subscribers. Once a team leader emerges I'd even be happy to pass list
admin off.

I just tried to subscribe via the web interface at
<http://beau.org/mailman/listinfo/whitebox-ia64>, got the initial
confirmation request email OK, but when I replied to it to confirm the
subscription I got a bounce:

Well! RH7.3's sendmail would run newaliases on it's own if the aliases
file had changed. WBEL doesn't. Guess I better remember that little
factoid. :)
